Hi, Beth...re: your question on my blog, the answer is yes. :) But the fact that she feels surgically attached to you right now doesn't have anything to do with ecological breastfeeding in and of itself. Even if you were just cutlturally breastfeeding, she'd still be attached to you 24/7 at this young age. She's only 2 weeks old, and that is normal and good. If you don't believe me, ask my sister, who just could. not. believe. how much Maggie was nursing there at the beginning. She kept calling me wanting to know if that was normal. It is. :) She's establishing your milk supply, so she will seem to nurse almost constantly. And she's bonding with you as her mother and primary caregiver, which is also important. Believe it or not, in a month or so, she'll start spacing out her nursing sessions, as she becomes more alert and aware of the world around her. It doesn't stay like this forever, so just hang in there! :) Follow her cues for nursing, holding, sleeping and bonding, and you're going to gain enormous benefits together.

Most babies have a "fussy hour" or couple of hours in the evening where they just nurse nonstop. This is normal, too, and will recede as she gets older.

The main things about Ecological breastfeeding that you need to follow are no restrictions of night and nap nursing, no solids until 6 months, no supplemental bottles or separations from baby, and no pacifiers. All her sucking should be at the breast and should be unrestricted. CCLI.org has lots of info, as does the book I mentioned. HTH!

Forgot to mention, babies don't just nurse for nutrition, they also nurse for comfort. So just because she's nursing constantly doesn't mean she's not getting enough to eat. You should watch wet/dirty diapers to monitor if she's getting enough. Babies have a tremendous sucking need, and it's supposed to be satisfied at the breast, if possible. I mention this only b/c I (and my sister) didn't know this at first. So let her suck! :) I

f you need a break, don't be afraid to let daddy hold her/change her/bathe her while you have a little alone time in the bath or out for a walk. Take care of yourself, too.

If your boobs are just completely worn out and you need a short break, sometimes newborns will suck on a well scrubbed pinky finger, too, which is something dad can offer. All mine did this in the first month or so. HTH!

HI Beth, I've been checking in on your blog to see how the baby and you are. YES, it does seem like they are ATTACHED 24/7! Maggie still seems that way inthe evening when she fusses. It will get better in a few short weeks. My sister, Michelle, just went through telling me all of what she has told you. I didn't believe her either! But she is right.

Absolutely no comment. None. I think I'm just going to go whimper in the corner...

Abdominal muscles?
What abdominal muscles?

Seriously, though, congratulations on getting back in shape so fast!!!!
