My Little Sleeper

I can't believe I'm even writing this post about one of MY children. Leo is the BEST sleeper of any of my kids so far. He blew away the "competition." About a month ago he started sleeping 11-12 hours at night. I thought for sure it was a fluke, but no. He's kept it up. Plus, he takes 2-3 really great naps AND I just lay him in his crib with his paci and he puts himself to sleep. It. is. amazing.

Julie took his 6 month pics last week. She did a great job, as usual! Here are some of my favorites:

And, she tried to get a good one of the three of them, since no one has been able to accomplish this feat in 6 1/2 months, but they were not cooperating. What else is new?
Ken thinks we're going to cut Leo's hair, but he is sorely mistaken!

Farm Day!

Last Friday we got to go up to Nicole C's family farm for the day. I'm pretty sure it was one of the top 5 days of Madeleine's life. She had a BLAST and is still talking about it. I was so happy to get to meet Nicole too, after chatting online for many months! John Paul loved her too, as you can see.

Jenny came with us, and touched the goat with ONE FINGER.
There was a mean goat, so poor Nicole had to keep him from headbutting the kids ;)
Madeleine and Jack hit it off RIGHT away, as you can see! Representative Lehe was awesome, very very patient with all the kids and showed them all around his farm.
John Paul was a little scared of holding the pigs, but he liked looking at them!

omg.
John Paul standing inside a tractor wheel!
This was Madeleine's favorite part of the day. She probably held 15 baby pigs! She'd tell Nicole which one she wanted next!
Megan, Me, Nicole and Jenny

All the kids climbing on huge farm equipment. So fun!
Nicole, thank you SO MUCH for inviting us! I think we are gonna have to make it a yearly thing, since Madeleine and John Paul have not stopped talking about it!

The Cast Saga comes to an end

First of all, John Paul had decided he didn't want to wear diapers the day before he broke his hand. I didn't know if it was the real thing or not, but after 2 weeks I think I can safely say it's the real thing! He's potty trained! I'm SO HAPPY!!! He usually doesn't watch TV on the potty but sometimes a boy's gotta do what a boy's gotta do. It took him a few days to get #2 down but he did it. I'm so proud of him. He was SO much easier than Madeleine. Oh and you can see how Madeleine puts her toys away (on TOP of the toybox instead of in it.) She fixed that later.

So last night he decided he was DONE with his cast (a day early.) He stuck it between the slats of his crib and pulled his arm out of it. Sorry these pictures are so terrible, they were taken with my phone in terrible lighting last night. He was pretty proud of himself!

Oh how we missed playing in water and sand! That's all we did all afternoon.

The doctor took Xrays this morning at our appointment, and although we could still see a line where the break was, he said it's healing just fine. He told me to just let him use his hand like he wanted to, not ask him to do anything extra with it. He has been using it all day. He picked up something heavy and immediately put it down and said it hurt, but other than that he hasn't mentioned it. I'm so glad it's over and can't wait to get in the pool tomorrow!!

Hooligans

You know your kids are bad at mass when an old friend (who also has 3 kids close in age) who was sitting quite a ways away from us, comes over after mass and said, "Don't worry Beth, you'll get through it."

(I really did appreciate That! But they were BAD tonight.)

6 months!

My baby boy is 6 months old today! For the first time in 3 kids I'm not a little bit sad seeing him grow up so fast, I'm thrilled that he's doing so well and thriving after such a rough start. He had his 6 month appointment today and he is.... wait for it.... 16 lbs 15 oz! And 26.5 inches! I cannot believe he is that big.
Almost rolling... can't. quite... make it...
The doctor and the nurse were both shocked today that I am still pumping and haven't had to supplement with formula. Like, mouths hanging open, speechless shocked. I was surprised but they said they NEVER see anyone go this long and the nurse even said it was a miracle I'd been able to keep my supply up. That made me feel good! 6 months was one of my goals, and my next one is 12! I am so happy and relieved I've been able to do it, and I feel like it I'm past the hardest parts and it shouldn't be too bad from here on out. Truthfully it's been one of the hardest things I've ever done, but SO worth it!

The doctor also said he was perfect and healthy, and happy that he's only had 1 ear infection when he predicted one per month when he was born. I told him I was concerned he wasn't eating solid food very well, but he said he'd be fine JUST having milk until a year, and I should just think of any solid food I'm able to get him to eat as "dessert." He actually does pretty well if I make the purees really thin, almost like a smoothie.
He has ridiculous hair! It's a mop of curls on top and not much on the back and sides! But I love it. Everyone always comments on it - my cousin Nick says he has Kramer (from Seinfeld) hair! He is happy and smiley all day long, although just in the past day or two he seems like he's developing a little stranger anxiety and looks around for me when someone is holding him.

I can't even believe I'm writing this about MY child, but for about the past 2-3 weeks he has been sleeping 11+ hours/night! The other two did not do that until 11 months or so. I am so thrilled about this! I'm able to go 8 hours without pumping at night (every 3 hours during the day), so I've been getting some good sleep too.
My absolute favorite part of the day is in the morning. I wake up to pump around 6, then he gets up around 6:30 and I bring him in our bed for a bottle. I feed him and then he cuddles up with me, holds my hands and puts his head next to mine and we both fall back asleep for about an hour. It. is. heaven. I love it so much.
He is such a wonderful special baby and I love him so much. His brother and sister love him too. He brings such joy to our family. I kiss those cheeks all day long. Happy half birthday Leo, we LOVE you!

Our weekend in pictures

The cast did not slow this boy down! He is doing great, and I'm not exaggerating, he has not complained ONCE about pain or about having to do everything one handed.

Look! They're playing nicely together! I had to document it.

Oh my goodness. My kids fill up our swingset!
On Saturday, Leo's Godfather Dominic got ordained to the Transitional Diaconate. So Leo, my mom and I drove up to the Cathedral to attend the beautiful ceremony. We are so proud of him!
View from the Balcony. Best seats in the house! Leo slept almost the whole time in the sling, even walking down for communion and being blessed by our former Bishop. It was awesome to see all the priests and seminarians. Funny side story, Dominic did not tell us that he was entering the seminary. When our friends were being ordained priests one year, we saw Dominic sitting up on the altar with the seminarians, and that is how we found out!
So, John Paul decided earlier in the week that he didn't want to wear diapers anymore. I wasn't even thinking about potty training him for a long time, like when he was closer to 3. (Madeleine was fully trained, night and everything, 3 months before she turned 3.) John Paul started telling me when he had to go, and he'd go in the potty. So I got tired of taking his diaper off and on every time, so I decided to let him wear training pants (we had two pairs.) I told him they were big boy underwear and made a huge deal out of him wearing them. He has done SO WELL! Two days into it, he broke his hand, but I decided to keep going and see how he did. Even in the ER, Even in the doctor's office, in Barnes and Nobles, at Grandma's house, everywhere we went, he never had an accident! (He had a few minor accidents at home, but he'd stop and finish up on the potty.) I am amazed. So we went to Target and he got to pick out his very own big boy underwear. He chose Superheroes and Diego (he has no clue who superheroes are, he calls them "funny guys.") It's been a week and I'm still putting a diaper on him for naps and night, but otherwise he's in underwear full time. I'm SO proud of him.

He likes his cast.
John Paul: Mommy, can I take my cast in my crib?
Me: Do you want to?
JP: Yep!
Me: Well, ok then! :)

This was on the way home from getting his cast. He was smiley!

(Not sure why he chose black, but at least he didn't choose pink!)

Baby's First broken bone

If John Paul had a baby book (besides this blog) this would be the title. Today we went to play group at the splash park. John Paul has been using the potty for 3 days (!!!!) but that is a post for another day. I took him to the potty at the park and he put his hand on the door frame just as a gust of wind blew the huge, heavy door shut right on his hand. It. was. awful. He screamed and cried for 45 minutes. Leo was at home with my mom, so I got Madeleine, drove home, dropped her off with Mom, and took him to the ER. I love this ER, they got us right in, took X-rays, told me it was broken 5 minutes later (the bone that extends from his middle finger), got it splinted and we were out of there in 90 minutes.

The medic who splinted him said he wouldn't be able to swim or get his cast wet for 4-6 weeks. I was totally devastated about that. He LOVES the water, the water table, the sprinkler, etc. This would throw a wrench into our summer. I have now heard that they do have waterproof casts, so I'm going to BEG the doctor tomorrow for one of those. Poor guy didn't get a nap today so he fell asleep in the car....
He was seriously so good in the ER. He talked to the doctors, the technicians, the medics, the receptionist, the nurses. They all commented on how cute he was and how well he talked. He followed directions, never once cried, and was fantastic the whole time. I was so proud of him.
He's showing his "boo boo." I wonder how long it'll take him to hit his sister with that thing?
He asked for hotdogs and ice cream for supper so we went out to Bubs and honored his request. He never once cried or complained (after crying for 45 minutes when it happened,) and he went right to sleep tonight.

Please pray we get a waterproof cast tomorrow! And pray he won't be in too much pain and it'll heal perfectly. Poor baby.

Heard at Mass tonight

I think we need to work on whispering this week.

Madeleine was sitting on my mom's lap at mass.

Grandma: Madeleine, say 'Thanks be to God."
Madeleine: Thanks Peter God. (looks really confused) Who's Peter GOD?
Grandma, trying to stifle her giggles: Thanks BE to God.
Madeleine, looking even more confused: Thanks Beeda God?
Grandma, laughing out loud now: No. Thanks. Be. To. God.
Madeleine just looks at Grandma like she's crazy.

A few minutes later, Madeleine starts pulling on the neckline of Grandma's shirt.

Grandma: Don't do that.
Madeleine: WHY?
Grandma whispers: Grandma's underwear is in there.
Madeleine looking more confused than ever: Grandma, how is your UNDERWEAR in your SHIRT? (Remember the kid doesn't know how to whisper, and there's a seminarian sitting directly behind us.)
Grandma, laughing, whispers something into Madeleine's ear.
Madeleine, in a totally normal (loud) voice: What's a BRA?
Grandma: You can ask Mommy later.

Breath of fresh air

You all know my saga of people commenting on my relatively small family size every. time. we go out in public. Last Sunday we were at our local outdoor mall getting ice cream. We were sitting outside and the kids were enjoying their cones. They were messy but relatively well behaved, for them anyway. A man walked by with his wife and two daughters, staring at us. Like obviously staring, head turned and his eyes followed us as he walked past. Then he said, "Wow. Two was PUH-LENTY for us!" I totally was not expecting that so I just stared for a second, then he was gone, calling out over his shoulder, "But hey, what's one more" in a sarcastic voice. I do NOT get it.

Today Ken got home a little early and we hit our local hangout, Barnes and Nobles. John Paul is very popular over there. His favorite barista picked him up and took him behind the counter and let him help make our drinks! We were reading our books and the kids were playing games, when an older man with a long ponytail approached us. I braced myself for the usual comments, but instead he said, "3! You're just getting started, right?" I smiled and said, "Yep, that's right!" Then he said, "I have 10, and this is my youngest."

He proceeded to tell us how it was great and interesting raising 10 kids. His youngest daughter, about 10, played with Leo and made him smile and laugh. It was totally refreshing. God bless him!

Exactly.

M: Can I go outside?
Me: no I can't go with you right now. Plus its raining.
M: why noooooot?
Me: why do you think?
M: I don't Think.

That sums up the reason She can't go outside.

Kid cracks me up

Madeleine, to Leo (1000x/day): I'm your big sister!

John Paul: No I'M the big sister. You're the big brother.

Madeleine: No, I'M the big sister, you're the big brother.

John Paul: No! You're the big brother, and I'm the big bad wolf!

First taste

While eating lunch poolside at mom and dad's house, Leo practically grabbed a handful of food off my plate and shoved it in his mouth. So, I decided to let him have a little taste of cantaloupe. He LOVED it. He kept grabbing my hand and pulling it back to his mouth. He was able to take some bites and swallow them no problem! I don't plan on really starting him on solid foods quite yet, but he's old enough to try a few things.

Oh and he slept 11.5 hours last night! Thrilled does not begin to describe how I feel about this!

Oh Look!

I have 3 kids :)

I have been reading A Holy Experience since her reflections during Advent. Yesterday I read this post, and was inspired. I got an app on my phone that has the mass readings of the day, the bible, tons of prayers, Liturgy of the Hours, etc. So during breakfast, when I have a captive audience and Leo is usually already taking his morning nap, we started doing a Bible Story and prayer. So far I've read the Gospel of the day and said the family prayer. Today Madeleine asked for another prayer so I found Mother Teresa's Daily Prayer, which I love.

DEAR JESUS, help me to spread Thy fragrance everywhere I go. Flood my soul with Thy spirit and love. Penetrate and possess my whole Return to "Paying Tribute to Mother Teresa of Calcutta"being so utterly that all my life may only be a radiance of Thine. Shine through me and be so in me that every soul I come in contact with may feel Thy presence in my soul. Let them look up and see no longer me but only Jesus. Stay with me and then I shall begin to shine as you shine, so to shine as to be a light to others.

They loved it! I'm definitely going to keep doing this.

Also, Madeleine completed Level 1 of her reading program today. She was really excited and can't wait to start Level 2 tomorrow. I showed her the very first lesson and the lesson she did today, and she was thrilled to see how much she has learned. She is also learning how to write her numbers and tell time. The kid loves worksheets! We are getting into the groove now and loving it. Who needs summer vacation?? (Especially when school takes less than an hour and is one of our favorite parts of the day!)

Thank you Hilary for fixing my header, and Julie for taking the pictures!

Big boy haircut

Before and after. I didn't butcher it this time! He loved the clippers, and when I turned them off he said, "how bout one more time?"

5 Months

My sweet boy was 5 months old, oh, 5 days ago. And I realized I have neglected to post his 4 month stats on here, and since this is the only place they are stored, he was 13.75 lbs and 25.5 inches, at about 4.5 months. I'm pretty sure he's around 15 lbs now. He seems HUGE to me!

First time in the backyard swing. He likes it! He doesn't, however, enjoy the exersaucer.
I love love love his curls.

See what I mean about him looking huge? This month we broke him of the swaddle, and he transitioned beautifully. Now he sleeps all sprawled out. He still wakes up once (on a really good night) but mostly twice for a bottle.

AND, I think he's looking at his guardian angel here.
He is such a smiley baby. He smiles at everyone and is almost always in a good mood. He has rolled over twice but I think they were accidents! (Belly to back) He got a new booster seat/high chair and loves to hang out in the kitchen with me while I'm cooking. He is going to bed great for naps and nighttime. I put him down awake and he puts himself to sleep (usually.) He has still had nothing but breastmilk - and I'm not planning on starting him on solid foods until he really needs it! He has an appointment with the surgeon sometime in June so I am going to ask for tips on feeding him. He says we can do everything the same as with the other two, but I kinda doubt it's gonna be that easy. We'll see, maybe he'll surprise us.
