Top 10 list Part 2

Top 10 reasons why I'm glad I went to Orlando.

10. Getting out of the house is nice every once in a while. It was a nice change of pace from our normal stay at home routine. I love staying at home of course, but sometimes it's nice to shake things up a bit!

9. It's really hard to pass up free airline tickets and a free hotel room in one of the nicest hotels I've ever been in!

They had gators and turtles and fish in the hotel! Madeleine was in heaven!

And it was all decked out for Christmas!

8. The weather was awesome. I mean it was absolutely perfect. Not too hot, not too cold, great for swimming. Coming from November in Indiana to 80 degree weather is pretty nice.

7. The pool! It was fabulous! I love love love watching my kids swim. It was only John Paul's second or third time and he absolutely loved it. He splashed and splashed. Madeleine could float around by herself in her little get-up. She squealed with delight and loved the octopus slide and the giant seahorses squirting water.

6. The splash park. Lots of waterfalls and things to climb on - water and climbing are two of her favorite things! It was so much fun to watch her.

5. Ken thinks it was a good experience for Madeleine. She got stimulated because of being out of our normal routine, had some new experiences, got to sleep in a different place, do lots of puzzles, and he thinks her vocabulary is even better now than it was before.

4. The breakfast buffet. Oh. My. Goodness was it fabulous. I love breakfast food so we splurged one day and did it. I think I went back 3 times and we stayed there for a few hours :) Also the rest of the food - the coffee shop was great, the pizza hit the spot, sushi was wonderful, and D bought us sandwich stuff and chips for lunch so we could save money.

3. Hanging out with D and having some girl time. Especially hanging out on her bed eating sushi and having drinks. The drinks should have their own number on this list! I especially enjoyed my pina coladas in the hot tub. Oh yeah the hot tub should have it's own number too! Or as Madeleine calls it, the "tiny ocean."

2. I am proud of myself for doing it by myself! I got a new level of confidence as a mother. Sure it was hard, but it was definitely worth it. It was really funny watching people's reactions when they said, "Are you traveling with BOTH of them ALONE??" and I said "yep!"

1. My kids getting bonding time with D. They absolutely adore her and she is going to be a fantastic mother!

The trip was definitely worth it! It was so fun and I'd go back tomorrow if I could :) Maybe with Ken this time!

If you want to see more pics of the trip go here.

Mobile!!

John Paul crawled forward for the first time today! Just in time to get into the Christmas tree, of course!

We were at my mom's house for Cousin Jude's baptism party. I put him on the floor and he spied his cousin Eli's Iowa football. He decided he really wanted it and crawled toward it! He did it several more times as well.

Interestingly, Madeleine's first crawl was toward a tea set. Girls and boys really are different!

Happy 7 months Bud!

My Bud is 7 months old today! This was the first month that I wasn't really happy with the pictures though, oh well! He is definitely in 12 month clothes now. Still long and skinny. He is almost always happy, especially if he's with his mama! His smile lights up the room :) He puts his whole body into it! And he's so cuddly - I love that.

He is getting up on his hands and knees and moving all over the place! I am sure by this time next month he will be crawling. His newest trick is getting from his belly to a sitting position. He just backs up with his hands until he's sitting straight up. He's pretty sturdy and likes to sit up and play with toys.
He's really enjoying eating solid food, except broccoli and cauliflower. He cries when I put that in his mouth :) He loves carrots, apples, pears, bananas, sweet potatoes, frozen mango, and he loves to chew on carrot sticks, celery and cucumber.
The child is driving me crazy with his sleep habits. He wakes up randomly through the night. Sometimes several times per night. Killing me. I am exhausted, but I still treasure those times holding him and cuddling with him at night. (Usually :) His favorite things to play with are spoons, measuring cups, paper, cups, baby tylenol bottle, flashcards, pretty much anything that's not a toy! I do not know what to get him for Christmas - a box with some wrapping paper? He'd love that!
He still loves to be in the sling - he is always happy in it. Sometimes I cook dinner with him in it. I think he likes to be up, close to mommy, and be able to see everything. I think I've heard that children get a little more clingy before they go through a major milestone. I have a feeling he's about to be mobile.

I admit, I was a little nervous about having a little boy when we first found out about it. I didn't know what it would be like, and I was scared about how he would turn out as an adult - is that weird? But now I LOVE having a boy - this particular boy - and I wouldn't trade him for anything in the world. I wouldn't mind having several more boys actually :) Girls too, of course!

Speaking of girls, Madeleine still absolutely loves her brother. We are so blessed. She hugs and kisses him all the time. She brings him toys, talks to him and plays with him. She even watches to make sure he doesn't get anything he's not supposed to have. In church last week he was sitting on my lap and she said, "Thank you for being so patient, John Paul!"

I love this kid!

And don't worry, the top 10 list part 2 is coming up tomorrow!

Top 10 reasons, Part 1

So this was probably the most spur of the moment thing I've ever done. On Friday D, John Paul's Godmother, called and said she really wanted us to come to Orlando for a few days to hang out with her while P was attending a conference at the nicest hotel I've ever seen. Ken looked up some flights and they were wide open, Saturday to Wednesday. So I decided to throw caution to the wind and try to go down there by myself with both kids and stay with them. We really had a great time and I'm so glad I went. I am really proud of myself for doing it! I probably heard about 100 times, "You're traveling by YOURSELF with BOTH of them???" by people in the plane, airport, hotel, etc...

D is the best, there is no way I could have done this without her.

So here's the first of our two-part series on this trip:

Top 10 reasons why no one in their right mind would travel across the country with a 2 year old and a baby.

10. Dragging 2 kids including one who doesn't want to sit in the stroller, 2 bags and a big suitcase through two flights, a layover, and a shuttle ride is physically exhausting. Not to mention holding a very squirmy baby on the plane while entertaining both of them for hours!

9. Fits were thrown. Two memorable ones in particular. The first one was after several warnings, Madeleine still wouldn't stop going into the closet and getting into stuff. I told her if she went in there again I would put her in time out in her crib. She did it, so I put her in her crib. She started screaming and throwing everything out of her crib. She threw her stuffed bunny out accidentally and then threw an even bigger fit ("My bunny! I want my bunny!") We were trying really hard not to laugh! The second one was on the plane on the way home. She was doing her puzzle and kept dropping pieces. I couldn't pick them up while holding John Paul very well. I told her not to drop any more and then she threw 3 pieces on the floor on purpose. So I took her puzzle book away. Then she started screaming (they passengers LOVED us!). I told her to be quiet or I'd take her silky away. She kept screaming so I took her silky. Then I took her stuffed bunny. She was screaming, "I want my silky! I want my bunny! I want my puzzle!" So I got out my phone and said, "Let's take a video of this so we can show Daddy." Then everyone around us gathered around to watch since they thought that was hilarious. She calmed down once she got an audience. She spent a lot of time in time out the first day. (After that she was much better.)
Time out in the coffee shop.

8. No one got any sleep. John Paul decided the first night in the hotel that 3:30am was as good of a time as any to wake. up. for. the. day. No one else agreed. I tried unsuccessfully to keep him quiet for about an hour and a half, and then D ended up taking him downstairs to the lobby and rocking him for a while. She is the best. They bonded and after that John Paul loved his Godmother.

7. This is a continuation of number 8. John Paul and I shared a queen bed. It's impossible to sleep with that kid! If he was a superhero he would be called "The Encroacher." I woke up 20 times a night hanging off the edge of the bed with him smashed up against me. I moved him over and he just came right back. Madeleine's crib was too small for her too, but she was a good sport!

6. Again with the no sleeping. After D and I were up all night with Bud the first night, we were hoping against hope that the kids would both sleep at the same time so we could get a little nap in. Apparently that was asking too much. Bud got to sleep, D and I laid down and told Madeleine to lay down and take a little nap in her crib. Well the child decided it would be a good time to test my patience. She started randomly screaming and making loud noises. She pooped in her diaper so I changed her. She would NOT be quiet. She woke up John Paul and D. I decided to take the kids for a long walk in the stroller so at least D could get a little sleep. Of course both of them were asleep in the stroller 10 minutes later.

5. We paid $55 to go to mass on Sunday. What. the. heck. We even told the cab driver lady that we had looked up the closest Catholic church so we could get the cheapest cab fare. She neglected to tell us that going to another church (the shrine) was a contracted cab fare of $13. We also think she took the long way.

4. D and P are adopting a baby in January. The quote of the week, "I used to hope our adoption would go through. Now I'm scared that our adoption will go through." Nice going, kids!

3. I missed probably the best Colts game of the season. We beat our rivals, the Patriots, by 1 point in the last few minutes of the game. I totally could have watched it too, but I think I fell asleep by 9pm that night (see numbers 6, 7, and 8!)

2. The incident report. I should have known my kid would cause an incident report to be filed at least once during our visit. We were playing in the sandbox, which has a stone wall around it, and a rope in front of the wall. Signs were clearly posted that said "No climbing." I told Madeleine not to climb but just to play in the sand. She decided she was going to climb on the rope anyway, and fell and hit her head on the stone wall. There was a lot of blood, a lot of first aid workers, and I had to fill out a report. She was fine, and she got a stuffed bear out of the deal.

1. Poop. in. the. pool. (This one is disgusting, you've been warned.) The very first time we went in the pool, she had pooped right before we went down. I only had two swim diapers for the whole trip (luckily John Paul's swim suit has one built in) so I decided it would be fine to conserve. She was in the pool not 5 minutes when she announced to all the people in the hotel, "Mommy! I pooped in my bathing suit!" I grabbed her out of the pool as fast as I could and took her to the bathroom. I peeled off her wet bathing suit. Poop fell all over the floor. She stepped in it. I sat her naked, shivering little body on the toilet, picked up the poop, and then had to wash her bathing suit and swim shoes out in the sink.

Coming soon.... Top 10 reasons why I'm so glad we went anyway!

I deserve some sort of badge of honor or something...

I traveled to Orlando with both kids BY MYSELF. We left on Saturday morning and got back a few hours ago. 1 toddler, 1 baby, 4 plane rides, 2 layovers, 2 shuttle rides, 2 packs of diapers, a double stroller, huge heavy suitcase, a carry on and my gigantic purse. Pictures and stories tomorrow. Right now I'm going to lay down on the couch for the rest of the night :)

We have.... a tooth!

He's been pretty fussy the past 3 days, and waking up a lot. He's been sleeping in our bed which isn't SO bad :) Finally his little tooth popped through today, and he feels much better. His other bottom one looks like it's not far behind. So he got his first one at 6 1/2 months, and Madeleine didn't get hers till 9 months. Kid is an overachiever!

I'm trying to learn how to use my camera better, so we walked over to the OLMC playground the other day and I practiced on my adorable, willing subject (and also a few on the less than willing subject, which didn't turn out well at all - how can a kid so cute take such a bad picture??) Anyway, here are a few of my favorites....

Hey, he has Dwight Schrute hair in this last one! :)

The wedding

Jenny's wedding was, other than my own of course!, the most beautiful wedding I've ever seen. They had the choir sing, and the music was incredible. We processed in to the Litany of the Saints - invoking all their prayers for their marriage. The Knights of Columbus lined the aisle with their swords. The Responsorial psalm was sung by a 16 year old girl who has one of the most pure, beautiful voices I've ever heard. Her talent could have only come from God. They recessional song was the Hallelujah Chorus!

Here are some pictures:

We had brunch with the bridesmaids and my kids. Madeleine did her puzzles and entertained us by doing her impression of Lucy from Charlie Brown and the Great Pumpkin ("My LIPS touched DOG lips!") She loves Jenny.

Here are all the bridesmaids and Jenny at the rehearsal dinner. I had heels on - I'm not really that much taller than everyone else :) Ken and I realized that this dinner was the first time we'd been kid-free together since his birthday, April 18. So he made me stop by a bar for a quick few drinks on the way home. It was great! (We were only there for 20 minutes or less Mom - thanks for babysitting again!!)

Jenny and her mom at her house before the wedding. She looked absolutely stunning.

These pictures are not really in order but Donna and me at the reception. Donna is Madeleine's godmother and we are SO sad she moved to Florida. Ken did not bring any cash so people bought us drinks! Thanks Jeff and Sean :)

The bridesmaids waiting for Jenny. Also Fr. Richard and Fr. Dan.

Jenny with the adorable flower girls. They were so beautiful.

My handsome buddy. He had a rough day. He had never been away from me and he did not enjoy it. He screamed the entire mass - Ken and my mom had to keep taking him out. Ken didn't even get to go to communion he was crying so hard. I got him after the wedding and he didn't let anyone else hold him for the rest of the night. And he's barely let me out of his sight since then. My buddy.

My sweet girl. Her dress was 100% silk from gymboree - from Ava and still had the tags on. I'm so glad she had a chance to wear it, it was beautiful!
By far the most touching part of the evening for me was Jenny's dance with her dad. Her dad is one of my favorites friends dads. He had written her a little encouraging rhyming note every day in high school. She had saved them all and put them in an album. He wrote her a little note and left it on her wall on the morning of her wedding too. I thought, how great would it be for a teenage girl to get a note from her dad every single day? They have a beautiful relationship. They danced to "Your song" by Garth Brooks, which I love.
And then my baby girl danced with her daddy to their song, "What a Wonderful World." I know I will blink and he'll be dancing with her at her own wedding.... but I don't want to think about that.
I'm so happy for you Jenny and Doug! What a great weekend it was!

The Hausers are married!!

And what an amazing weekend it was!

If you can believe it, blogger is not letting me upload photos tonight! Also I can't link to my facebook album. If you want to see pictures email me and I'll send you the facebook album link.

First of all, the weather on November 7th in Indiana was absolutely perfect. 70 and not a cloud in the sky. So beautiful. We started the weekend on Friday with Brunch with all the bridesmaids and my kiddos. Then I ran home and put my kids to bed, my mom and Ava came over, and I met up with them again and we all got our nails done. I went home again to get ready for the rehearsal and rehearsal dinner.

Side story: While I was getting ready for the rehearsal dinner I brought both kids upstairs to play in John Paul's room while I was getting ready in my bathroom. They were doing great playing for a while. Madeleine gave John Paul toys and read him stories. I checked on them about every 30 seconds, but apparently that was not enough. About 5 minutes before I had to leave, I went in to check on them and smelled something very strong. Madeleine said, "Mommy! I put "chest" all over John Paul. And the cat!" (She calls Baby Vicks vaporub "chest.") Yep. John Paul's head was covered. I quickly cleaned him up and had to let the poor cat fend for herself - I had to get going! (She's fine.)

Anyway, Mom sure was great this weekend, I could NOT have done all this without her! She came over again at 5:00 so I could go to the rehearsal, and ended up staying when Ken got home. They fed both kids and got them in their jammies. I went to the rehearsal, then came to put John Paul to bed and get Ken, and we met them at the rehearsal dinner. We both had prime rib - YUM! We got to sit next to Jenny's dad, who I love. I learned later that John Paul woke up crying and mom was able to rock him back to sleep. Then Madeleine pooped herself awake. Mom was a trooper!

That's it for now, wedding stories coming soon!

Put down the Ducky

Madeleine never. stops. singing.

She sings all day long, when she's playing, "working," when she's supposed to be sleeping. She sings real songs and she makes up her own songs. She makes up her own words all the time too. This clip is just a short clip of her singing while she's doing her puzzles in Barnes and Nobles. She doesn't care who's watching or listening, she just sings.

And if you're wondering what song she's singing, here it is:

Bless us O Lord

My friend Jenny has been telling me I need to get more videos on here. Apparently she has nothing better to do? :) Anyway, this is for you Jenny!
